Tom has researched, presented, and published widely on the topic of entrepreneurship. Additionally, he is a mentor and consultant to many Irish SMEs. Through this integration of theory and practice he has been able to bring cutting edge research to small firms, as well as real business experiences to his students.

Tom is currently:

• Director of the DIT Institute for Minority Entrepreneurship
• Research Fellow at the Dublin Institute of Technology
• Adjunct Professor at the Small Business Institute, Turku School of Economics, Finland
• President of the European Council for Small Business (2009-11)
• Board Member of the International Council for Small Business (global organisation)
• Founder, former Chairman and current Board Member of INTRE (Ireland's Network of Teachers and Researchers in Entrepreneurship)
• Member of the European Commission FP7 Advisory Group on SMEs
• Council Member of IRCSET (Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology) – Chair of sub-committee on Enterprise Partnership Scheme
• Member of the Enterprise Ireland County Enterprise Initiative Committee
• Chair of the Irish Judging Panel of the European Enterprise Awards
